Jackpine Paddle offers guided canoe expeditions on the legendary South Nahanni River (Nahɂą Dehé) in Canada's Northwest Territories!

If a true northern river journey has been on your bucket list for years, the Nahanni delivers like almost nowhere else: remote, wild, and steeped in story. Flowing through Nahanni National Park Reserve — a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of Dene territory — the river spills nearly 100 metres over Náįlįcho (Virginia Falls), close to twice the height of Niagara, before threading four enormous canyons whose walls climb more than a kilometre overhead. Along the way you'll watch for Dall sheep on the high ledges, soak in Kraus' Hot Springs, climb to the lookout above The Gate, and read the early-river history of Deadmen Valley around the fire. We give the trip an unhurried pace, with two days at the falls and built-in layover days for the side hikes that reveal the country's true scale.

Rather than rushing off the moment we reach the takeout, we close this journey as guests of the Nahɂą Dehé Dene Band at Nahanni Butte — hot showers, a real bed, a shared meal, and time to hear what this river means to the people who call it home.

The Nahanni Classic suits paddlers with some camping experience and a reasonable level of fitness for the hikes. No whitewater background is required; our guides handle the navigation and teach the skills you'll need along the way.

Want a longer trip that starts higher up the river? Check out our Grand Nahanni expedition, which adds the gentle upper river, the Rabbitkettle tufa mounds, and views of the Ragged Range.
